“Be Still” by Dianne H. Timmering

He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”  Psalm 46:9-10

The world churns and we worry. A gold finch pecks my office window with the tip of its beak; it flutters at the glass with the spanse of its wings. It lands on a narrow branch and floats in the wind like a raft upon an aging sea. I stop and listen. Is the voice of God in the hum of this quiet, the stillness of a whisper, the peck of a beak, the trading winds, a choir of geese? God, help us to find the stillness of the moment: to find You, to know You, to be with You.
